4 September 2009: A Biography Of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland |

 |
| The GB Russia Society present a talk: "A Biography Of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland To Soviet Heartland" by Associate Professor Dr Kate Brown (USA) on Friday 4 September 2009, at 7.00pm. (Language: English)
From 1923-1953, the Polish-Ukrainian-Jewish-German borderlands on the western fringes of the Soviet Union became a Ukrainian heartland, cleared of its minority populations and moved to central Ukraine. Now part of this territory, the Chernobyl Zone of Alienation is entirely depopulated. Brown tells the story of how the ethnically rich borderlands disappeared, along with much of its population, who were suddenly re-identified as outsiders. Ironically, ethnic cleansing grew out of the very instruments of modern governance – the census, map, and affirmative action- programmes first employed by the Soviet progressive reformers to improve the borderlands. All parties that arrived to rule in the region – Soviet communists, Nazi – Germans or Ukrainian nationalists – worked to ‘improve’ the territory. And in so doing, they all brought on destruction, mass deportation and genocide. This talk will be illustrated.
Dr. Kate Brown is Associate Professor of History at UMBC in Maryland. She is the author of A Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland (Harvard, 2004) which won the American Historical Association’s George Louis Beer Prize for the Best Book on International European History, the Heldt Prize from the Association of Women in Slavic Studies and Honorary Mention for the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies’ Wayne C. Vucinich Prize for 2005. She has published in the American Historical Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Harper’s on-line edition, Kritika, and is a regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement.
