Dmytro Verbitsky, an impoverished Ukrainian aristocrat, is actively engaged in WWI, the Ukranian Civil War and WWII. Despite the cruelty of Stalin’s regime, he manages to raise a loving family, avenges his wife’s rape, learns to understand and forgive his father’s suicide, and nurtures hopes for Ukraine’s independence.
The novel "Wretched Land" describes the passionate love, the intense suffering and the miraculous survival of one family who lived in Ukraine through the hardships of World War One, a Civil War and World War Two, the famines of 1921, 1932-33 and 1947, and a cruel Stalinist regime. The story is fictional but it is interwoven into the fabric of Ukrainian history. |

Kyiv, January 24, (Interfax-Ukraine)
Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has met with the leader of Britain's Conservative Party, David Cameron, during the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Yuschenko said Ukraine wants to develop cooperation with the United Kingdom, in particular in economic and investment cooperation and trade development, the presidential press service reported.
Trade between Ukraine and the United Kingdom in January-September 2007 was $1.7 billion, which is 30% up on the same period of 2006. |
