NEW: Gareth Jones - Eyewitness to the Holodomor |
| | NEW BOOK ON THE HOLODOMOR PRE-PUBLICATION SPECIAL OFFER - ORDER DIRECT AND SAVE £8 WITH FREE POSTAGE (UK ONLY)
This is the first academic study of Gareth Jones, now recognized as one of the first journalists to reveal the horror of the Holodomor, the Soviet Government-induced famine in the early 1930s, which killed millions of Ukrainians. Of interest to students of journalism, eastern-European history and political studies this book provides a fascinating insight about one of the most devastating events of the twentieth century and the social, economic and political factors that contributed to the famine.
Travelling as a foreign affairs adviser to David Lloyd George and Ivy Lee, two of the most influential people at that time, the Aberystwyth and Cambridge-educated Jones, a fluent Russian-speaker, investigated reports, denied by the Soviet Government, that their Five-Year Plan had led to mass starvation by visiting the affected region and the Ukrainian people.
His numerous articles published in the UK (Evening Standard, Daily Express and Western Mail) as well as those written about him in the USA (New York Evening Post and Chicago Daily News) exposed the Holodomor, but Jones's credibility and integrity were immediately attacked and denigrated by the Soviet Government and its sympathizers within the journalistic profession such as Walter Duranty of the New York Times.
Ray Gamache is an Assistant Professor of Journalism in the Department of Mass Communications at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Alla Hors’ka’s Artwork for Sale |

|
| It is with great honour to present Alla Hors’ka’s artwork for sale. On behalf of her son, we are seeking individuals/institutions who are interested in owning an original Alla Hors’ka.
ARTEast has launched itself in partnership with CU3 Design Ltd. Our goal is to provide our clients with unique and high quality art. Our launch was successful with over 11,000 viewers worldwide. Background Alla Hors’ka was born in Yalta, a predominantly Russian-speaking region of what was the USSR. At the age of 14, she moved to the capital city of Ukraine where she became interested in art. In 1954, she graduated from the prestigious Kyiv Art Institute under Ukraine’s most predominant artists Hryhor’yev and Sharanov. This is also where she met her famous husband Viktor Zarets’kyi. She was extremely active and is remembered for her political activism on human rights. She was the founder and leader of the youth movement ‘Suchasnyk’, a major influence of freedom of expression during the 1960’s. So little of her art remains today…
Her Murder She was a threat to the communistic regime – she fought for freedom and democracy. She was murdered at her father-in law’s apartment in 1970 at the young age of 41. Officially, the investigation found that her father-in-law murdered Alla and then he, himself, committed suicide. Even though authorities hushed up talk of her death, it caused uproar both in Ukraine and abroad. The case is still open…who killed Alla Hors’ka? | |

New Publication: Hardly Ever Otherwise by Maria Matios |

|
| Grand Prix of the Ukrainian literary contest 'Coronation of the Word'
Everything eventually reaches its appointed place in time and space. Maria Matios’s dramatic family saga, Hardly Ever Otherwise, narrates the story of several western Ukrainian families during the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and expands upon the idea that “it isn’t time that is important, but the human condition in time.”
In Matios’s multi-tiered plot, the grand passions of ordinary people are illuminated under the caliginous light of an ethereal mysticism, and digressions on love, envy, transgression, and atonement are woven into the story. The reader is submerged into a rich world populated by a grand cast of characters and ideas, which Matios animates with her prolific imagination and subtle wisdom. Each character in this outstanding drama has an irrefutable alibi, a unique truth, and a private conflict with honor and duty. Her characters do not always act in accordance with logic and written-law, as the laws of honor clash with the laws of the heart. And this is why it is hardly ever otherwise.
