The Ukrainian Catholic University held a fundraising dinner in London
19 June 2015
The Ukrainian Catholic University held its first ever fundraising dinner in London on 19 June 2015, following a tradition of fundraising in cities across the US and Canada.
The event was held at the Members Dining Room in the House of Commons. The British Ukrainian Society acted as an information and logistics partner, coordinating the planning of the inaugural event.
The fundraising dinner attracted 150 people including guests from Ukraine, the US, Canada and France. They participated in tours of the UK Parliament, an auction featuring some of the finest works by artists from Ukraine, and a raffle with items donated by various individuals and Embassies to the United Kingdom.
Andy Hunder, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, acted as emcee, while Bishop Borys, President of UCU, shared inspiring words during his keynote speech. Additional speakers included Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport John Whittingdale MP, as well as Ukrainian Catholic Foundation Trustee and BUS Advisory Board Member Lord Oxford.
Zhaivir, a trio of bandurists, performed Ukrainian folk melodies during the VIP drinks reception, and a spirited musical performance was given by Taras Chubay that got the black-tie attired audience singing and dancing.
Over GBP 98,000 was raised on the night, with the Ukrainian Catholic University nearly reaching its target of GBP 100,000. To date, through their Comprehensive Campaign, the University has raised USD 57m over five years. These funds are used towards the construction of a modern campus, the launch of new academic programmes and the establishment of an endowment.
