Ukraine: its Global Choice
12 June 2018
On 12 June 2008, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Embassy in London, the British Ukrainian Society presented another lecture in its series given by Andriy Parubiy MP, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The Attlee Suite in Portcullis House was packed with people eager to hear Mr Parubiy’s speech entitled “Ukraine: its Global Choice” and participate in the Q&A session.
When the event was drawing to a close, Lord Oxford gave the floor to Alex Ryabchyn and Svitlana Zalischuk, Ukrainian MPs and Co-Chairmen of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the United Kingdom, who were present at the event.
Alex Ryabchyn MP, who is from Donetsk, noted how he has personally watched the bilateral relationship strengthen and flourish over the previous five years, first as a student at Sussex University and now as an MP, calling it inspirational. He thanked the British MPs and Peers who have visited Avdiivka in Donbass, risking their lives to see the front line for themselves and taking time to meet with soldiers, school children and university students who all voice their desire for a European future for Ukraine.
Svitlana Zalishchuk MP framed Russian aggression in Ukraine as just one part of the global battle that Russia is waging, from the Skripal poisoning in Salisbury to meddling in foreign elections and cyber attacks. She encouraged the United Kingdom not to underestimate the threat Russia poses, and thanked Britain for its continued support for Ukraine.
In his closing remarks, Lord Oxford thanked Mr Parubiy and the visiting MPs for their efforts, as well as the guests for their continued interest in the British Ukrainian Society.
