February 4, 2019:
“Mr Jones” film screening
Join HE Mrs Galibarenko, the Ambassador of Ukraine and Lord Risby, Chairman of the British Ukrainian Society, for a preview of the new British film “Mr Jones”, set at for general UK release later in the month.
This film is a bold and heartfelt drama about the life and times of Gareth Jones, the Welsh journalist who risked his life and reputation to bring the truth about Soviet collectivisation and ensuing famine in 1930s Ukraine to the world’s attention – this in contrast to the fawning reports and “fake news” emanating from other media sources at the time.
The film stars James Norton and Vanessa Kirby and is directed by Agnieszka Holland. It was shown at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival, earning a very positive review from The Guardian. After the screening, we will have a short discussion with a special guest associated with the film.
The evening will end with a drinks reception for all. We will also be collecting for the Mykola Pekh Scholarship Fund in support of gifted, disabled students at one of Ukraine’s finest universities – part of the EBRD Community Initiative which supports staff members’ philanthropic activities in the countries in which the Bank invests.
This event is organised by the EBRD Cultural Programme, the British Ukrainian Society and the Embassy of Ukraine to the UK.
Doors will open for registration at 17.15 (EBRD London headquarters - One Exchange Square, EC2A 2JN London, United Kingdom) and coffee and tea will be served. The screening will begin promptly at 18.00, followed by a discussion and Q&A session, and drinks reception finishing at 21.15.
Admission is free and EBRD staff members need not register. External guests will have to register online by Friday 31 January.
Please note that all guests must bring a form of photographic ID and may be subject to a random bag search.
